We track the squads of winning teams across top competitions daily via the
Sportmonks API.
A title only counts once the championship is mathematically decided.
Tracked competitions: Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A,
Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Liga Portugal. FA Cup, Copa del Rey, DFB Pokal, Coupe de France,
Coppa Italia, KNVB Beker. Champions League, Europa League and Conference League will
be added once the finals are played (end of May).
We only count players who are actually in a national team squad —
not just anyone with the right passport. A player counts if he's both in a champion
club squad and in the national team squad of a World Cup country.
⚠️ Once the official World Cup squads are announced (approximately
2 weeks before the tournament) we'll switch to the real WC rosters.

How many titles did the 1988 Euro finalists win in the preceding club season (1987/88)? PSV claimed the treble: Eredivisie, KNVB Cup and European Cup I. Erwin Koeman won the Belgian title and the Cup Winners' Cup with KV Mechelen. Gullit and Van Basten became champions with AC Milan in Serie A; Rijkaard played that season at Real Zaragoza. 7 of the 11 starters were already smelling of champagne before the Euro began.
We simulate the full World Cup 2026 using Elo ratings — every match has a probability based on team strength. Set how much weight FIFA ranking vs. champagne bottles carry. Every simulation can turn out differently.

The Champagne Meter shows how many players per World Cup 2026 national team won a club title in the 2025/26 season. The theory: you don't win the World Cup with the best players, but with players who still smell of champagne.
A league title or domestic cup title earns 1 bottle. A Champions League or Europa League title earns 2 bottles. Only players actually selected for the national World Cup squad are counted.
We track the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie and Liga Portugal, plus the FA Cup, Copa del Rey, DFB Pokal, Coupe de France, Coppa Italia and KNVB Beker. The Champions League and Europa League are added after the finals in late May 2026.
Data is updated nightly at 03:00 UTC via the Sportmonks API. Once official World Cup squads are announced (approximately 2 weeks before the tournament), we switch to the real WC rosters.
Our historical data (1988–2024) shows the theory is confirmed in 10 of 19 tournaments — and wrong in 9. The nation with the most bottles has won the tournament only twice. Explore the full history on the historical page.
